Motorcycle Airbags Exist - But No One Uses Them?

Airbags are a no-brainer in cars. But the case is not so cut-and-dry on motorcycles. Here’s why airbags haven’t reached mainstream adoption on motorcycles.

Thanks for the video as it convinced me to get one … since Helite airbag was only about £40 less than the alpine-stars tech air 5 … I got the electronic one and it hides well underneath my riding jacket

No one uses them because they are ridiculously expensive, and there are good protective gears that you can buy for fraction of the cost

I utterly lost it at 2:10 when the airbag deployed unintentionally. I'd worry that this could be a bit of a hazard if it were to deploy unexpectedly, could startle the rider and cause them to loose control. Hence I too think the lanyard makes more sense. Another thought: Actually there'd be a plus side if these became mandatory: Now they're $900, probably because it's such a small market there's not much economy of scale, not a lot of competition, and so on. If they were mandatory, there'd be a lot more demand, and a lot more incentive to make them cheap. More like helmets, mandatory at least in some places and there's tons of good options on the market at reasonable prices.

"but they like the risks"... Fine like your risks. But by choices you make you take what could be a simple fender bender into a life and death situation. You should be partially responsible for any accident you get into but they won't...

I'm now shopping for this technology and loved the perspective. I disagree with the pricing comments on the Klim, as it allows someone to get into the tech for less out of pocket, and pay as they ride. (or stop paying if the technology changes in a year or two) Heck, I pay $13/month for iPhone insurance. $10/month to help protect my body seems like a no-brainer.

Interestingly enough in my state it is required to sell all new cars with airbags however it is not illegal to drive without an airbag nor is it required to replace a deployed airbag with a functioning one.

Ryan: thanks for your videos. I think you misinterpreted the CE Airbag rating for the Dainese product. The back protection of their product meets or exceeds CE Level 1for airbags which means the transmitted force is < 4.5 kN ; not 'only good up to' 4.5 kN as you state. Cheers.

I don’t much care for tethered airbags. You’ll find the most common motorcycle accident “the low side slide” they will sometimes be ineffective because you and your bike slide at the same speed and if your leg gets trapped the same direction. No 60lb tension on your tether = no deployment. I’ll take the electronic bag, Klim to be exact. I know boo subscription! as long as you remember to pay your bills it seems like the best option.

Why no mention of the Hit-Air VHR vest? Which inflates faster around the neck - the VHR or the Turtle? What is the total time in milliseconds (tether activation + inflation lag) vs an electronic system like Alpinestars or Klim? RyanF9 I’d appreciate a bit more intellectual rigor from you. It’s what I’m used to. FWIW, you talk about this like someone who either doesn’t use an air-bag vest or doesn’t think those milliseconds will matter if one broadsides a van. Go with the worst case scenario and tell me which one is the most effective.

There Is a reason the biggest names (Dainese, alpinestar) have developed and sold Just Electronichal airbags, because they are more efficient. For example: The Dainese one can predict an inpact even when the moto Is not in motion, handy when stopping at an intersection and a car hits you from behind. The internal bag Is made of a particolar texture, microfilaments that ensures high shock absorption capacity more than a classical inflatable bag! More so over the algoritm uses its sensors to monitor and process data 1,000 times a second, way faster than the time that takes the elastic cord to complete the full extension and "pull of" the bike (and what if It doesn't "pull off"?!). So you must really know the articles you are reviewing especially before doing a video of protective equipment. Guys Just go to the dealers, from alpinestar from Dainese or others, they are not trying to steal your Money! The Sellers (of course their job Is to sell things) are prepared to give you full detailed informations, happy to help you even if you are Just there for FAQs. Thank you and Sorry for my english.

I would seriously consider this as a nice safety addition if it weren't in the $6-$700 range for a basic Helite vest. Seems overpriced for what it is. Once it gets in the 2-$300 range, I think it will pick up some traction.

ABC’s of SALVATION ADMIT: You’re a sinner, condemned to DEATH (physical & spiritual) . Romans 3:10, 23 There is none righteous, no, not one … For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Romans 6:23 & James 1:15 the wages of sin is death … sin, when it is finished bringeth forth death. (Spiritual death is eternity in HELL !) BELIEVE: that JESUS died, rose again, and that HE ALONE can save you from sin, death, and hell. Romans 10:9-10 if you: believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness. CONFESS: JESUS CHRIST, and nothing else, as your own Saviour. Romans 10:9, 10 & 13 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus … confession is made unto salvation … whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Before it’s too late, forever, DO IT NOW! God’s gift is FREE and as easy as A-B-C !

I have a huge problem with being tethered to my bike. Id rather just deploy it like a parachute. It sounds stupid because then you're relying on your shitty brain for a good reaction time, but you can train yourself to make pulling it a natural instinct. You could also move the deploy string to a more convenient spot for this purpose

My dad passed in motorcycle accident and I love riding still. Yes we all love the freedom but 30 years ago was a different time for safety. If you had a helmet that was fair play for destiny but today this makes me happy. It's not freedom if you don't want to die and just enjoy a ride yet that stops a lot of riders who have had traumatic experiences. Definitely a good investment and sound advice. Always a huge fan of this channel. Keep it up

What hogwash. Automobile airbags kill more than they save. Not hard to figure, adding energy to an incident usually results in MORE injury not less. But hey, Joan Claybrook can't be wrong about eliminating seat belts because airbags are so effective. Still in 2021, all cars have seatbelts, and why? Because airbags can't replace what seatbelts do in cars. Ever. I've bailed from motorcycles too many times to count, and 6 times over 100 mph, on and off track. Would a puffy pillow have saved me from certain death? I don't know. I'm still here without the benefit of self-inflating protection technologies, and all four limbs still work just fine.
lobuxracer
lobuxracer Prieš 20 dienų
@Mac Thompson Between Mary Myer and Tremika Finney's statistical analysis and Takata's disaster, I'd rather not have the airbags at all. I agree crumple zones and seatbelts are de rigeur. But any safety expert will tell you adding energy to an already bad situation isn't a good idea. Add to this blindness, both temporary and permanent as a result of the explosives, and it's pretty simple to see I'm no fan of airbags. The arrogance of Joan Claybrook didn't help, but seeing my ex's face after hitting at wall and getting punched by Mike Tyson when the seatbelt held her in place just as it should have made me forever despise these infernal objects and the fools who implemented them. Had we spent the billions of dollars we've squandered on airbags over the years to purchase defibrillators and deploy them, we'd have saved far more lives than any claim made for airbags.
Mac Thompson

But that is not allowed unless you have been given permission by the channel holder directly to post links. And apparently your strikes add up and they don;t tell you)

"The idea that airbags kill more people than they save is a myth; fatalities from modern airbags are exceptionally rare. Some of the older airbags (primarily 1997 and earlier) can be dangerous even to adults, but they’re still far more likely to save your life than take it. If you’re very short and/or frail, you may be better off with no airbag than an ’90s airbag, but you’re still far better off with a modern airbag than no airbag" Crumple zones, seatbelts, and airbags do save lives. Cars are very dangerous and the forces that get exerted on the body when you crash your cage are very extreme. That being said. I don't own a vehicle with any of those things lol. that helite turtle would eff me up id always forget to untether it i just know I would lol.

I will take your advice. On my 250 dual sport. I can charge anything I use. Very simple. Even charge my battery by solar. Simple plug-in on my handle bar. I ziptied it to it. It has an on and off switch. An volt meter. An cigarette lighter or the adapter plug spot. Two USB plug-ins. To charge the battery by solar. An 20 watt solar panel that has different adapters. I just turn the on switch on. See how many volts my battery has. Then if need charged. Plug in the solar panel into the cigarette lighter spot. Put the panel into the sun. Let it charge. Cellphone. Put it, into the holder. Plug the charging cord in. Start the bike. Turn the plug-in on. As I ride. My cellphone stays charged. Simple. One ground wire. Two zip ties. An positive wire to the battery with an fuse. Amazing tool. Even for GoPros that are on the bike. Simple airpump. Many different uses. A lot, life saving. Thanks on the airbags for bikers. I have never even thought about it after all of these decades.

Good video on a very relevant question. @FortNine Have you tried Hit Air RS 1 vest? I is tethered on the back which enables you to move around on the bike, has no electronics and easy/cheap to reset. It offers less protection than Helite but it has considerably less bulk which in my opinion the main reason why people don't use airbag vests to begin with.
