The Smallest Adventure - KTM 390 Adventure Review

Small bike. Big deal. Is it the first truly capable small ADV? Or just another half-hearted effort, carefully designed not to offend bigger siblings? [Details below]

This video is kind of crazy. Because we see F9 riding the bike very well through a variety of mild to moderate off conditions, showing the bike to be capable. It has great suspension, not just for it's price but period. He likes the bike alot, but is pissed about the foot pegs. Ryan is very tall, so the issue will be exaggerated for him, but for shorter riders, like 5' 9" and under, with a little crouch of the knees(or a lot for tall riders) you get into a very good riding posture. This bike is really a scrambler with its ground clearance and ergonomics, which is great because most of the riding I would expect to be capable of doing on a bike that cost so little fits within it's abilities and unlike my KLX it is awesome on the highway. It's really a mislabeled scrambler, and maybe KTM will do some cosmetic redesigns and market it as a scrambler, because its a damn good one, with highway savvy for dirt cheap money. With the spoke wheels now available for the 390ADV, maybe they will have the 'r' version. They can be serious, there is no reason why they couldnt put a 21" wheel up front(and keep the 17" on the rear). It would be very bad ass. I really like that the description says possibly "carefully designed not to offend its older siblings" For my size at 5'9", I think this is a good choice for anyone who wants the fun of the 390 duke powerrplant, but with a comfortable seating position and getting awesome suspension and very respectable ground clearence for a scrambler. Come on KTM, remarket this into a scrambler, black with minimal amounts of orange and keep the cool headlight. This is the first KTM since I've been familiar with the brand that offers an upright seating position in this price range and that's good news for many riders who wanted a KTM, but didn't favor the duke's forward riding position. I would like to get the KLX 300sm but it will probably never be available in my market, so a scrambler with decent ground clearence for the reality of most all of my riding(I have a klx 150 now with similar suspension travel and I have no shortage of fun on it.) I'm going to get the 390 scrambler that KTM has mislabled as an adventure bike, because it will get the job done very well of putting a smile on my face when I ride it for very cheap dollars. But, I do hope the reliability is reasonable. They've been out for a while now and I'm not hearing much about engine problems. The KLX300sm is the best for sure of the two for a do everything(and much lighter) bike on our road conditions, but we only have the R version here, maybe in some paralel universe I am riding a KLX300sm with some tkc80's, but in this one it will have to be the ktm scrambler.

Handlebar raisers aside, isn't Ryan just too fkn tall for this bike!? I don't think he is even able to notice the difference between this and the Duke except for the price. Even that small ground clearance is much better in the adv and not a deal breaker, you can still power wheelie over that log. The only complain I have about it is the unbearably hard stock seat.

The conclusion doesn’t follow the logic of the rest of the review either because it’s a joke, a troll, or just a badly developed verdict. I bought the Black Dog Cycle Works pegs that lower by .5 inches and level the pegs flat. I also bought the adv tribe handle bar risers raising them almost an inch. I also bought the ktm power parts off-road seat that raises it almost an inch. These three things cost about $400 but there are cheaper alternatives on the market if you’d like. With these three mods I am very balanced on the pegs, the handlebars are high enough and the seat sits in the perfect position so that I can control the bike more. I also avoid trying to ride over obviously inappropriate obstacles like fallen trees. Not sure what Ryan was thinking in his conclusion here it’s not like he doesn’t mention in his other reviews modifications as a way to address other bike shortcomings.

I'm from India And here ( where Bajaj-KTM manufacturers its bike ) Is as cheap as an ordinary commuter bike So if you want to experience a hard core sports bike But having low budget Then KTM is for you 👍🏻 But not in the American market its little expensive there

At the end of the vid you were trying to get over a log to demonstrate lack of clearance - could you do this with the 390 duke and report the results. I'm guessing worse than just looking for a way around a tall obstacle - like end of ride. Look forward to it.

Good video and I always enjoy Ryan's stuff. Issues brought up include peg angle, bar position and ground clearance (and cast wheels). First, nearly every ADV rider dials a bike into their egos, and replacement pegs (rather for the angle as in this case, or just for size) and risers/bars are among the first upgrades. Ground clearance is not bad for a light ADV bike, especially considering that the wheel base is shorter than the big bikes. Does this compare with a 790 ADV R? No, it doesn't have the suspension, wheels or power. But it's also half the price and 90 lbs lighter. It's also barely half the price of a 690 Enduro. This bike is probably the best VALUE in the ADV world. 7" of suspension travel isn't ideal-but it's not bad for the purpose of an ADV bike (not a "dual sport" or "plated dirt bike"). I have a 1290 SAR and am thinking of trading for one-looking for something smaller, lighter, and not $18,000 to go bounce around in the dirt. Frankly, I don't take the big bike some places I used to go on my smaller, lighter bikes. If you're using the full capabilities of a 690 E or 790 R, this probably isn't the bike for you. If you want to blast through the desert at 100mph, get a 1290 SAR. But for getting out and exploring the backcountry, on pretty rough forest service roads or ATV trails, on a bike that is fairly light (by ADV standards, not "dual sport" ones), with a good bit of technology (personally I could do without ABS or TC, but it's not a bad thing) this looks like it might be a good fit. Both for new riders looking to give ADV riding a shot, or for older, experienced riders getting a little "past our prime" (such as me). Looks like a pretty good BDR bike, IMHO.
