What happens when you tell a bunch of car designers to go build a motorcycle? Well, this. The Honda PC800 Pacific Coast. Overlooked genius or just another Failblog entry?

Cars started out as luxury items, not as a realistic means of transport. I suggest to everyone to read Automania by Tom McCarthy...but before Ford it was a bicycle or horse as a means of transportation. A horse carriage was expensive and for upper class as well. People now see motorcycles as toys and not as a good way to get around in a city. Everyone thinks the car is the more reasonable choice but they are so wrong. Not all motorcycles are loud, not all go 230mph, and many cost under 10K

I think the problem for Honda was that most Europeans either use a bike for sport or for commuting and the PC800 wasn't fun and it wasn't agile enough for a city commute. In the US, where the PC800 made more sense, I suspect most bike riders are driven by what their bike says about them and unfortunately the PC800 doesn't say anything flattering. I currently have an NC750X and I think it borrows a lot from the PC800: it has an inbuilt trunk that's easy to use, it's cheap to run with low service intervals, it even uses half a Honda Jazz car engine. Hell, you can even choose an automatic version.

At the beginning he called it a VT800! Which is does share the motor with the VT800 Shadow. I owned one as my only vehicle for a couple of years. It is a great commuter, and a better daily rider than the Goldwing. Reliable, good gas mileage, easy to wash, funky, and oh yeah, that trunk. And for the 'scooter' moniker, many PC800 owners also own a Honda Helix.

Honda started the push to infiltrate the car driver market in 1986 with the introduction of the Helix CN250 scooter. The first scooter with "feet forward" riding position (sitting really), glove compartment, handbrake and a boot (trunk). It was so successful that it remained in production until 2009 in Japan. Very comfortable and capable of long distance touring (at 70 mph top speed) and surprisingly agile despite its very long wheelbase (1,625 mm)
