This cultural hot potato of the 80s had everything - flawed design, thoughtless marketing, irresponsible dealers, young lives lost, sickening injury rates, bad parenting…the lot. Here’s the messy story of the three-wheeled ATV.

Still have my original 84' Honda Big Red 200es i had from when i was a kid. Still fires up easy and has never been rebuilt. Never broke a bone or had any serious injury from it. The things a pig, but still a blast, just got to know how to ride them.

I had one of these and had a blast! Very under powered but a blast none the less. Crazy when you look back at older times the things we were able to buy and do lol. Probably why each generation before had a bit more grit.

I figured out how to bail out and lived! 10-11yrs old, I was going 40+ down a gravel road. My entrance came up too quick and I couldn't make the turn, and clear the fence. I dismounted and prepared for impact. Bike hit the fence pole at the entrance and flipped 10 times. I went flying and had a ouchie shoulder for a few years.

I fucking love 4-wheeled ATVs, sadly due to me living in Mississauga, they are banned. But luckily I have 35 cousins up in Sault Ste Marie and they all have ATVs, the Soo has 300miles of Sanctioned, inspected and signed off-road trails within city limits alone, used only by ATVs and Snowmobiles

Those were nice bikes but so unstable, had a friend that got killed on one that had a quick throttle instead of thumb throttle... I crashed a few and also hard to get away from... But I was a motocross racer... Loved balancing on the front and side tires..

We rode the Honda 250R Yamaha Tri z 250 and Kawasaki Tecate 250 . Those two strokes were beast and blast to ride back in the 80s . Should have kept them. Crazy what they sale for now. Also wish I never sold my 1987 Suzuki LT 500R QuadZilla.

I think I crashed mine when I was kid in every way you described. Then i got a "safer" dirt bike and I still crashed....but now at a faster speed. To be honest I never really like three wheelers...they did tip easy but I did think the government trying to ban them was dumb. It was just people trying to blame someone else for bad decisions and poor riding skillls

i got an ATC 70 when i was a kid, and only fell off it a few times thrashing it around the fields and never rolled it at speed, you absolutely have to steer from the rear, and lean like you're carving a snowboard. the most dangerous thing i used to do was rev it and dump it in first to wheelie, the semi auto was great for that but it used to catch out my friends would try... I still have it and plan to make it road legal (now im late 30s). they are super expensive over here in the UK

I was a kid who rode one of these in the 70s. It pretty much throws off or rolls over any kid that tries one within the first 5 minutes. You were just expected to get up and keep riding. Looking back I can’t believe they let kids ride these. I was ran over by one, flipped over backwards on one, rolled down a hill tumbling with one, and flipped over sideways countless times. All the while without protective gear and surrounded by trees, rocks, and fallen branches. If you consider a soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan had less than a 6% chance of being hospitalized or killed during their tour but a ATC rider had a 30% chance during the time owning one..., it puts how dangerous these things are in perspective.

A 350 ATC just showed for sale up on Farcebook here in the UK. A US import of all things. The comments are full of a mixture of "You're gonna die!" and "If you know what you're doing you might live".

I was essentially born on, and likely conceived on a trike :p. IIRC the trike was my primary mode of transport from age 4 or 5 till 12. Honestly never felt at all unsafe. I drove like a complete asshole with only one small accident. Like all things, idiots goona idiot. Trikes are so light that you can roll them safely without being crushed. Pretty near all my friends at the time also had trikes, and no serious injuries. It wasn't till they were banned and we all had to "upgrade" to quads, 3-5x the mass, that kids started getting hurt.

just have to know how to ride em. They got banned because people put 10 year old kids on one of the fastest recreation vehicles ever built, the 250r.. this was the start of the "sue me" culture when people stopped taking responsibility for their own actions.

grew up on these, horses, tractors, cars etc. as much as i enjoyed them sadly yea they were very tippy. even just doing regular farm work they were top heavy no suspension added to the roll overs. rolled it with my grandpa on back we going 2-4 mph just fixing fence.. ........ sloped hill hit a badger hole on high end on back went right over. it rolled few times down the hill. neither of us were hurt again such slow speeds. i think grandpa just stood up and walked offf and picked me up as it went down the hill. still though

As you pointed out, the manufacture's "volunteered" to remove three wheelers. They were not banned by the government. Granted, they were being shown what will happen to them IF they refused, but they still agreed to remove these evil machines and the Consent Agreement was born. It has long since expired, but manufactures still follow the agreement to this day.

Nice video, but I am a little confused - the figures for injuries and deaths you show at 10.19 is headed "Quad Accidents 2005", implying that these figures are for Quads rather than just the three-wheeled ATV. Are there any figures for three-wheeled ATVs alone? Also, are these figures just for the USA, or worldwide?

a bad idea yes............no different from many things.......not suitable for children. As adults we can make more informed and experienced decisions on risk..........so we can manage things like heavy machines, firearms, cars, alcohol and trikes/quads/bikes. Now some adults cant do anything competently, but thats what natural selection is for..........that also applies to adults who cant supervise or care for children competently..........their children will die also, so that the world is not over run with imbeciles anymore than it is already. Great video, on the issues that affect trikes ))

I have had 12 bikes over my lifetime. We bought a 85 Honda 200X off the show room floor. Along with an XR500. That 3 wheeler was fun but deadly. We were in Southern Ca. I took a friend out once we were both 13 years old. He road the 3 wheeler. He hit a rut. Front and right rear tire went in the rut. The bike stopped instantly. He held on to the bars. And snapped his arm right above the wrist. I was taught how to crash. Let go of the bike and create some distance between you and the bike. Well my friend was not taught how to crash. That video is dead on. You had to ride the hell out of those bikes and then they were a blast. Nothing like the Cr480, but what is.
