This cultural hot potato of the 80s had everything - flawed design, thoughtless marketing, irresponsible dealers, young lives lost, sickening injury rates, bad parenting…the lot. Here’s the messy story of the three-wheeled ATV.

Ever heard of BVC trikes? Yeah they build modern three wheelers out of 250, 450, and also, 500 2 stroke dirtbikes! Yeah there kinda crazy! Oh and also, they build modern big wheel dirtbikes too! Go check em out!

People smart enough and/or lucky enough to afford an offroad vehicle find themselves in situations out of their control. Regardless of the man made machine, I haven't known any that a person hasn't been in an accident with. Heck, hikers get hurt relying on their personal machine called the body. I've risen pretty much everything, and, anything can happen at any time. Just like learning to drive a car, something most of us take for granted and a right to adulthood, people need to learn to operate any machine before becoming familiar with it. Pushing the extreme limits can lead to painful ends. Personally I'd prefer the 3 wheeler and the sometimes challenging trails. But I'm a trail rider and explore, not race. Sometimes ego is the enemy, sometimes stupidity. Man, the humans, make the machines, the machine does not make the man...

Very misleading clip. When humans don’t use common sense (like using drugs) people get hurt. The media and government had a field day with this issue kind of like Covid. They sucked the public into believing the big lie.

But they did get the idea of small off-road vehicles going. And the four wheel ATVs that soon followed were game changers for outdoor enthusiasts.

Been riding a 350x WFO since the late 80's yes it's spanked me many times ,just as my quad , street bike ,4 wheeler ,ski' s and snowboard. Still my favorite toy into my 40's! As another person stated , it's only as dangerous as the operator. I've always said, when in doubt throttle out!

Why aren't people going after 4-wheeled ATVs/ATCs, or four-wheelers?? There have been many more injuries and deaths from people riding those... because they are stupid and/or irresponsible. ANYTHING can be dangerous.

As kids me and my friends were too light for the front wheel to grip when turning, causing the 3wheeler to sledge in a straight line. So we were taught to lean out on corners so that the front tire had enough weight on it to grip and turn. We crashed and got injured a lot as teenagers thinking we still needed to lean out when turning to stop it from sledging.

Anyone who got a three wheeler after a dirtbike and fourwheeler knows they take more skill and make you a better rider at the the other two. Never wrecked mine until the throttle cable got stuck. I wish manufacturers still made and sold them they are so much fun to ride and really not any more dangerous than any other off road vehicle.

Grew up during the 80s riding 4 wheelers, and my friend had a Honda 3 wheeler. We were zipping in between trees one day and he caught a stump with the back tire which instantly stopped his trike and sent him flying. Broke his shoulder pretty bad.

Myself and over a dozen friends have been riding Honda 350X's since the 80's. The machines are awesome and safe if you take the time to learn how to ride them. They were banned because a bunch of unskilled morons didn't take the time to learn how to ride them properly or just put their kids on them and turned them loose (often without helmets or other protective gear). People think you steer like a 4 wheeler, then they crash. You steer at speed by sliding the rear end and counterbalancing the slide with your body position. It's poetry in motion when done properly but like archery, white water kayaking and many other sports it takes time and practice. You shouldn't blame a machine for the failings of the operator.

Another excellent video though Id say that the end was a little contradictory. Yes people are still getting injured on quads but the quad is a much easier to ride vehicle thus is much less likely to flip. Three Wheelers were just an unfortunate combination of unstable and accessible to be a big problem.

I never knew these ATV's were banned and I used to ride them quite a lot in Wyoming. They could be dangerous if riding downhill as they could turn over and roll over you; they could also tip over backwards if riding up a very steep hill. I knew that and would ride them responsibly and never once had a problem.
