Two-up riding can be an extremely enjoyable experience or a terrible one. Here's how you can ensure the first option.

After my wife got comfortable riding 2 up in a parking lot and round the block, I took her out for dinner. There's a nice, long, easy curve where I get to lean in a bit at pretty good speed (less than 50mph, but higher than 35). When we got to dinner I asked her if she remembered that turn. She said she did. I said "Great! Whatever you did on that curve, do THAT every time." She said "I didn't do anything" 🤣

For a rider are grab bars sufficient or is around the waist a better way to remain attached to the bike?

I wear a purpose-made belt with handles -- important safety equipment, especially on a sporty bike with a small pillion seat and no backrest, like my Speed Triple.

And what to do with a Sleepy Stacy? My girlfriend has the habit of falling asleep on the back of the bike, knocking her helmet into mine when she does, or when I shift/brake. Also makes her shift backwards when I accelerate. Of course keeping her awake would be best, and Ive asked her too, but she just falls asleep every time

My favorite part is when I lean far inside a corner, my pilons foot scrapes the ground an she quickly rearranges herself on the backseat. Nothing better than a bit of work in the suspension while driving on the edge. Well I guess just drive a little more patient then

I like my pillion that put their feet on the ground when I stop. And of course follow my body in corners. You can know whether a pillion is used to ride a bike or no by their body movement.

Haha. I had a girlfriend named Stephanie and she would always move around when I was going up to a stop or leaving a stop and no matter how much I told her not to move around or adjust herself until I was up to a normal speed she would still do it. She would always let go at this time also and shift her weight around when I was going slow either to a stop or leaving one. One time I had told her not to twice already in like 10 minutes and she pushed down super hard to the right side as I was almost about to stop and the bike almost when down. I was already super annoyed because I went over that shit a thousand times so I yelled at her and she didn’t move around anymore after that.

I give briefers to each new pillion. I explain things and dynamics to them such as: 1. Hold onto the sissy bars, or my kidney/waist belt only, never hold on to my shoulders, which would affect the way I control the bike. 2. Mount and unmount only upon my explicit instructions. 3. Keep the torso close to mine at all times including when leaning into curves and corners. Pass me a signal when the pillion's ass or body is already aching from too much riding. 4. Avoid falling asleep on longer rides as much as possible (applies only to my wife). 5. Enjoy the views from back there. I literally have to ask pillions to dismount if they can't follow these simple and sensible rules.

My best rules; - Hold my waist (shoulders for guys) - Squeeze muh hips with your thighs - Sit straight, if you get tired lean on me but not too much (I'll shrug my shoulder if too much pressure), hold my waist and RE-TIGHTEN those thighs as well as put your head to the side or keep it straight, do not bump my helmet. - Lean WITH ME always. I do not lean on every single turn with a pillion as it is too much weight at lower speeds so I make sure to emphasize WITH ME. - Double tap ONCE if you need to communicate with me (I will do so at the next stop or slow down and lift my helmet) - Double tap TWICE if there is an emergency, I will stop as soon as possible. Final rule: I will go fast only when I think it's safe. (almost never)

To be fair, I prefer my passenger to not move. I tell them to imagine they are a tied down sack of potatoes. If they want to look into the turn, cool, just no leaning. I also ride. Cruiser so I got a bigger saddle.

My worst pillion experience.. I was dating this girl in college, she had no interest in bikes. One day she said, "Hey my friend jenny loves bikes, do you think you can give her a ride?". I'm like "sure, do you know what size helmet she needs?" She's like "her head is about the same size as mine". I say, sure bring her over and we'll ride. Next day, I go to my girl's place and fucking Fenny is there. What I wasn't told is, Jenny weighs at least 110kgs. I'm on a 250 bike and I weight 80Kg... I can't say no without looking like a massive douche... My last hope is, maybe her head won't fit inside the helmet. Amazingly it somehow does. Defeated, I mount the bike. Jenny mounts the bike and my lower back. I know if bike leans over more than 5 degrees, we're done for. Sketchiest 10 minutes of my life follows. I can't touch the throttle at all, because as soon as I do, we wheelie. Handlebards don't care about my input at all. The bike just goes straight. We somehow survived the experience. Jenny is happy as a pig in a sty. I'm considering my life choices. Good times.

Bikes used to have hand grips at the back of the seat. This made it 1000% safer and more practical to pickup a passenger. The entire talk: "Hands go here. Feet go here. Don't take your feet off the pegs until I say." I would not take a 300 lb pillion on a modern sportbike. I have done that with a 90's bike, no problem at all.
